The  environment

(AND WHAT YOU CAN DO TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE)

"Ignore the environment... it will go away..." Bumper Sticker

"Take care of the land and the land will take care of you."  H. Bennett

"He who plants a tree plants a hope."  Lucy Larcom
Did you know that trees...

- manufacture 5 pounds of pure oxygen every day

- consume CO2 to fight the "Greenhouse Effect" that threatens our survival

- proved the cooling equivalent of 10 room-sized air conditioning units
- reduce fossil fuels used for heating & cooling

- collect pollutants from the air

- reduce noise pollution

- produce homes for birds and small animals

- enrich surrounding soil

- prevent soil erosion

and that...

- recycled paper is used to make millions of other new things

like - notebooks, paper lunch bags, stationary, calendars...

- every tin can you recycle saves enough energy to power a TV for up to 3 hours

- some recycled plastics are made into school supplies and toys

 - planting and saving trees gives us healthy oxygen to breathe

- for every ton of paper that is recycled - more than 10 trees are saved from being cut down

- glass that is recyclable can be recycled forever and used over and over again

 - most paper can be recycled up to 8 times

-recycling helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions

- it takes plastic water bottles thousands of years to decompose

- soda and water bottles that are recycled can sometimes be used to make baseball hats, rulers and the soft stuff in your pillows

  • What YOU can do...

BE A PART OF SOMETHING BIG!

    - Recycle your cell phone
    - Plant a tree (a free blue spruce comes with my book The Bike Ride)
    - Build a bird house, hang it outside and keep it filled with bird food
    - grow a garden
     - learn about a compost pile and start one

    REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE

    - Buy veggies (and meat, too!) from your local farmers
    - at the store: "paper or plastic?" "neither, I have my own
    re-usable bags"
    - conserve water as if always in draught
    - ride your bike
    - carpool with friends
      - turn off the A/C... open windows!
     - turn off lights and unplug unnecessary items or appliances (e.g. computers, cell phone chargers, TVs, etc.) conserve energy...
